Elk is very slushy and unfishable this morning. It should clear up later once the weather clears & the sun comes out. Stream is off-color with a strong flow & needs to clear up a bit more. With highs in the upper teens and mid-20's through the weekend, the temp. will definitely play a factor in whether the stream ices back up. If we get a strong flow icing should keep to a minimum.

The elk is coming down nicely and will beyond a doubt fish tomorrow throughout the stream. This means that all the others will be as good or better. The flow will be strong but the color will be green in the elk. There is currently no ice anywhere in the stream but as we go through the week look for this to change. We have some very cold days coming the coldest being friday and saturday. The flow will help us but how much I am not certain. I will wtach it as we go through the week

The stream is at a full blow out today as the mixture of rain and snow from Sunday was
enough to really raise the streams up. I am sure that all the streams are the same. The forecast is for the temperatures to start falling today and continue through the week . Teens by the end of the week for highs and lows. Some light snow showers but no major storms predicted as yet. Sunday afternoon I cleaned a good number of fish and everything I cleaned was fresh females with good tight eggs. This, I think, is the start of the spring run fish and this high water should bring many more in. I think we will be back on the streams by Wednesday of this week and the only problem I see is the lower temperatures causing slush in the morning and freezing conditions for your line and guide.

I just looked at Elk and there is more open water every day. The access area is starting to open up past the boat ramp and from there up stream past route 5. There is plenty of open water at Whiteman's Bridge and I am sure that it continues like that as we go up stream. There is lots of open water in the Sterrettania area and I have had several reports from fishermen of good fishing in this area. It will stay warm all week and then maybe rain for the weekend which could blow the whole stream out; we will see what happens. Anyway, fishing is now Ok and getting close to good. Good luck to all and watch for a new web site Elk Creek Fly Shop coming soon. Thanks Dan

The streams are starting to open up some and there is open water at the access area on the Elk. The melt has been slow and the stream has been not rising too fast. We have a warm week ahead of us and that will continue to improve the streams some more. I do not look for a totally open stream until we get some significant rain. The main Lake however remains ice free.

The weather has improved somewhat but it is still winter out there. The ice fishing at the mouth of Elk is very good right now. There is plenty of ice and there has been several people on the ice. There is also open water in the streams so that all you have to do is break some ice out and you can fish Ok. Look for things to get even better this weekend as the weather warms even more. We will have another web site up soon and that one will have a really good fishing shop for you to find the things that you need and are hard to find.
